Who we are

The money advisers are employed by East Renfrewshire council to offer residents free and confidential advice with any debts. The money advice service is accredited under the Scottish National Standards for Information and Advice at Type II. This means that money advice staff meet the quality level defined by the standards and provide an efficient and effective service. In addition, all money advisers are DAS (debt arrangement scheme) approved.

What to expect

When you make contact with the service, we will call/contact you within 5 working days to discuss your needs.  We will discuss your debts and work out your income and expenditure commitments. All information provided is confidential and will not be passed to a third party unless you give us permission to do so. We will provide you with various options to tackle your debts including repayment plans, bankruptcy, trust deeds and income maximisation. Once you decide on which option, we will contact all your creditors on your behalf. This means that creditors should now contact the money advice staff regarding your debts and you should receive fewer reminders.

PPI claims support

We can also help if you have been mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) and we will support you free of charge. Call free on 0800 052 1023 to request PPI claim assistance and a self help pack will be sent out to you.

If you prefer to make the claim yourself, you can download a PPI questionnaire which will help you gather all the information you need.  You should send this questionnaire to the original creditor. There is also a guide to reasons for being mis-sold list which can assist you with your claim.

Quote from person who used the money advice service

My husband and I lost our jobs at the same time and it hits you full on  You don't know where to turn and you try to keep plodding on. My husband went to the Council and they told him about Money Advice. We were allocated a member of staff right away and he immediately lifted the pressure, it was a huge relief and he took control. He contacted our creditors on our behalf. He sat down and helped us work out our finances and let us know what we were eligible for. He was so approachable and extremely confidential. He came to our house which was great as it was so private. He put our life back on track. Because of his help we got a new gas heating system and insulation which we never thought we would ever get. He provides continuous support by coming out and carrying out reviews of our situation and we know we can turn to him anytime for help.  So pleased with the service.
