Keeping safe in your home

East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) works with other council departments and external agencies to keep adults safe from harm.

No Cold Calling

Social Work is delegated responsibility for protecting adults at risk of harm under the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 but recognises that feeling safe at home is a much wider issue.

This page relates to community and home safety and makes link to consumer advice from Trading Standards, Community safety and Technology Enabled Care (TEC), as well as Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.


Trading Standards and Prevention services

Our Trading Standards service carries out activities to protect and advise local consumers and businesses, and to maintain and improve trading standards. They are responsible for administering legislation that governs the quality, quantity, safety, price and description of goods and services.

We also have dedicated staff looking at ways to prevent our residents from being the target of or falling for the scams of con artists and fraudsters:

Trading Standards are concerned that elderly or vulnerable residents are being targeted by doorstep callers selling goods and services at over inflated prices.

Sometimes vulnerable adults do not have the same access to the internet and the ability to shop around for a good deal. They are being sold products such as alarms, orthopaedic beds and mobility scooters at exorbitant prices. Persuasive sellers can entice a poor value purchase. Most of these agreements, signed at home, have a cooling off period.

Trading Standards advise that they regularly deal with complaints about doorstep callers targeting elderly and vulnerable residents.  Every year the area is targeted by scammers who knock doors and offer to do roof repairs, driveways and gardening work etc. They urge family and friends to assist older or vulnerable relatives in researching products and prices and encourage them to turn away doorstep callers.

Report Doorstep Callers or fraudulent workmen

East Renfrewshire Trading Standards are warning residents not to employ people who turn up at their door unannounced. 

Contact 'Ring and Report' to report Doorstep Callers in the East Renfrewshire area or if you suspect a fraudulent workmen is operating in East Renfrewshire. Note the registration number of the van as well as any other details about the individuals.

No Cold Callers

Trading Standards in association with the Community Police, are warning residents not to deal with 'here today gone tomorrow' doorstep callers. Trading Standards have produced a label for displaying on your door to say 'No Cold Calling'.
