Cycle workshop is quids in with £200 donation

Barrhead Centre big cheque

The team at the Melo Velo cycle Club in Barrhead Centre were jumping for joy when they received a cheque for £200 from Asda's Community Grant fund.

It means local people voted for the workshop to receive the funding when they put a green coin in a see-through box each time they shopped in the Barrhead store.

And Asda community colleague Linda Cummins from the Barrhead supermarket presented service user with their cheque in the cycle workshop area of the Barrhead Centre.

New kit

The generous donation will be used to fund pairs of work boots, branded polo shirts and heavy duty trousers for the workshop team to wear when they are fixing bikes.

Set up by service users at the Barrhead Centre, day centre for adults with additional support needs, the Melo Velo Club is a unique cycle and repair project staffed by adults who attend the centre.

Opportunities

It also gives people with a disability in East Renfrewshire a unique opportunity to loan and go for a spin on specialist cycles including trikes, a hand-cycle and Scotland's only direct wheelchair access tandems.

To become experts with bikes, service users received training so that, under supervision, they can fit tyres, repair punctures, service bikes and run a safety check for a small fee. To ensure the workshop's sustainability they also sell used and reconditioned cycles and new and used parts.

The project was originally supported with funding from Cycling Scotland and it is supported by CHCP's criminal justice team. Individuals completing community payback orders also helped get the project off the ground and regularly help out at the workshop.
