Changes to admission arrangements for East Renfrewshire schools agreed

New criteria will be introduced in January 2017

Education consultation

Councillors have approved changes to the admissions arrangements for primary and secondary schools in East Renfrewshire* following overwhelming public support for the move.

A public consultation process was held to give residents the opportunity to have their say on introducing a single set of school admissions criteria across the area.

The changes - which will be introduced from January 2017 - will allow the council to meet the high demand for places from residents across the entire school estate, but in particular those seeking a place at a Roman Catholic school.

"We listened carefully to all of the feedback received and as a result have amended our initial plans in order to address concerns which were raised. Some families have already committed to a particular school for their older children and wanted the opportunity to continue within the same school for their younger children. So we have agreed that for the next two years higher priority will be given to children who already have siblings in a particular school as part of a transition towards the new arrangements. Councillor Elaine Green, Convener for Education

During the consultation - which ran from 26 August 2016 to 10 October 2016 - a variety of engagement events took place including two public meetings and meetings with parent councils.

In addition to 72% of the public backing the plans, pupils in our schools were also consulted and again the majority - 54 per cent - also supported the proposal.

The report submitted to Education Committee also made it clear that the council will continue to work hard to tackle attempts to obtain a place in ERC schools by deception.

The changes will apply to new primary and secondary pupils from January 2017. All pupils already at ERC schools are unaffected by these changes as all existing arrangements for children currently in all our schools will be honoured.

All placing requests for the session beginning in August 2017 will be dealt with using the new set of criteria. Placing requests must be submitted by January 31.

For full details of the new criteria go to the School admissions consultation.

*These proposals do not include Calderwood Lodge.
