Official opening for £1.6m family centre

The youngest members of our school community were on hand to help mark the opening of the new Cart Mill Family Centre in Clarkston

Cart Mill opening

Cart Mill children Abby and Holly Constable handed a commemorative plaque to Convener for Education and Equalities Councillor Elaine Green as she opened the centre on Monday 20 February.

I'm delighted to be here today to help officially open Cart Mill Family Centre. It's fantastic to hear first-hand from youngsters who attend the nursery and their families about how they are benefiting from the high quality early learning and childcare here. This spacious facility enables quality learning indoors and outdoors and is affording more opportunities for families to engage in the life of the centre. The investment in this new centre is part of a £77 million commitment to improving the education estate in East Renfrewshire over the next three years.
- Councillor Green

East Renfrewshire's newest family centre provides 130 full-time equivalent early years places for Busby, Clarkston and Eaglesham children aged from two-years-old up to the age of five.

The building has first-class early learning and childcare facilities and features bright, open plan playrooms with direct access to outdoor learning spaces, a kitchen and dedicated family and dining area.

The family centre is open for 50 weeks of the year, providing parents with access to child care during holiday periods.

Parents across Scotland currently enjoy 600 hours of free childcare at local authority run early years establishments, but this will rise to 1,140 hours per year by 2020, and East Renfrewshire is working to put in place the additional infrastructure and staffing necessary to meet this requirement.
