Audit report 2017 front cover

An audit of East Renfrewshire Council (ERC) has highlighted a number of sector leading practices, with strong performance across a wide range of areas.

The 'best value audit' report, published on 7 November by the Accounts Commission, also outlines key successes since the Council was last audited in 2005.

One of the main highlights is the continued improvement of children's services and education from an already high level of performance.

The Council's clear vision and strategic direction for East Renfrewshire is also recognised as a significant positive by the Accounts Commission as well as good working relationships between councillors and the Council's Corporate Management Team. Strong leadership by the Corporate Management Team is also highlighted.

The report reflects some areas where the Council can further build on its performance, particularly in view of the challenges facing ERC in future years and work is already underway to address these.

This report highlights that East Renfrewshire Council continues to go from strength to strength. It is particularly pleasing that the good working relationships between councillors and the Council's Corporate Management Team were highlighted. I expect this positive way of working to continue throughout the period of this new administration because working well together is vital as we strive to do the very best for our residents.
This effective leadership is helping to ensure that local Council services are being well managed in the face of the significant financial challenges ahead in the coming years.
Councillor Tony Buchanan, Leader of East Renfrewshire Council

We are pleased that the best value audit report from Audit Scotland reflects the significant progress which has been made across the Council in recent years. The report highlights a wide range of areas which demonstrate sector-leading practice, with some areas of challenge highlighted for future years as our population continues to grow and budgets become tighter. We are already focusing on these with our community partners. In fact, by highlighting our strong, well-established partnership working and community engagement, the report captures very well the value that we place on working closely with our partners to ensure we are collaborating effectively for the good of all our residents.
Chief Executive, Lorraine McMillan

Audit Scotland carried out their audit between January and April 2017. The audit included interviewing councillors, senior officers and partner organisations; observing a range of council and committee meetings; reviewing documents, and conducting focus groups with councillors and officers.

The audit findings were then reported to the Accounts Commission, endorsed by the Commission and published 7 November.

Councillors will consider the findings of the Accounts Commission at a future full Council meeting before agreeing the Council's response and next steps.
