Our Commercial team, in common with other local authorities, inspects local food businesses regularly. How often each business is inspected is determined by the 'risk rating' given to each premises. Ratings are from A – E and are determined by a national Code of Practice. This is provided by the Food Standards Agency and every council adheres to it.

This means the business is approached differently and will not be subject to a full inspection. In East Renfrewshire, this type of business will receive a visit by one of our Officers to ensure that its operations have not changed, and that it is provided with information and guidance relevant to its food activities. If the business activities relating to food handling have changed, the business could be given a higher score and could move into a higher risk category as a result

Each business is scored against the same set of criteria, depending on:

  • whether the business manufactures food

  • whether raw and ready-to-eat foods are prepared in the same premises

  • the structure of the premises

  • the food hygiene and safety controls in place

  • the number of consumers likely to use the business

  • confidence that the management will improve or maintain standards

An extra score is added if the business prepares or sells food to the elderly, people who are in hospital young children or babies.

Scoring scales

The main scores which give our Officers an overall view of the food handling practices are added to each report. These scores are on the following sliding scales:

  • Food hygiene and safety: a score of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25

  • Structural: a score of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25

  • Confidence: a score of 0, 5, 10, 20 or 30

Generally speaking, the lower the score is, the more satisfactory the inspection. However, some premises may find it difficult to achieve lower scores if they provide food to a vulnerable group, as explained above.

Food Hygiene Reports will gradually be added to the site on a regular basis. In the early stages of site development, not all inspection reports will be available to view.
