Health and safety at work

Annual Health and Safety Report

Our annual health and safety report tells East Renfrewshire citizens and other interested stakeholders what the council is doing to protect the health and safety of our employees, clients and service users, pupils, members of the public, contractors and others who may be affected by our activities.

It focuses on the risks of injury and ill health that can arise from the diverse activities that a large public service organisation undertakes in order to deliver its services, and how the council manages these risks. The report's performance information is analysed in detail, in order to identify areas for improvement.

Corporate Health and Safety Policy

In line with our general and statutory obligations to provide a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, we have adopted a statement on health and safety policy. It should be seen as a policy statement of our intention to create, maintain and develop a safe and healthy working environment.

It is our policy to take all reasonable, practicable steps to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all our employees. We also acknowledge our responsibilities to people other than our own employees.

The statement is divided into 3 sections, which cover:

  • the general principles underlying our commitment to creating a positive health and safety culture

  • the specific responsibilities placed on the Chief Executive, the Deputy Chief Executive and other departmental chief officers, and also the general responsibilities of employees in developing a positive health and safety culture

  • the specific procedures and arrangements that need to be introduced, in order to implement and monitor these policies

All our employees will be expected to co-operate in the implementation of our Safety Policy by:

  • acting in the course of their employment with due care for their own safety and that of others, who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

  • co-operating, so far as is necessary, so that we may perform any duty or comply with any requirements, as a result of any Health and Safety legislation which may be in force.

  • using correctly all work items provided by us, according to the training and the instructions received to enable items to be used safely.

A copy of the policy is available for inspection from the Deputy Chief Executive.
