Regeneration and town centre management

Town Centres

We commissioned a report in 2001 to look at ways of improving the competitiveness and vitality of East Renfrewshire’s small town centres, in the light of competition from Paisley, East Kilbride, Glasgow and Braehead. Our aim was to halt the decline of our traditional town centres, by re-defining their roles as shopping locations and by prioritising those areas which require a physical upgrade.

Clarkston / Sheddens was identified as a priority area suitable for a pilot project. More than £65,000 worth of improvements have been carried out to date, including:

  • Additional Christmas lighting at Sheddens

  • Resurfacing of Sheddens Roundabout and new granite setts

  • Introduction of flower planters and hanging baskets

  • Introduction of Farmers Market

  • Co-ordinated street furniture, bins, railings etc.

  • Marketing support, including web articles, brochures and press advertising

  • Removal of graffiti and tidying of plants
