For most parents having a baby it is quite an emotional time, and there's a lot of organising to get ready for your new son or daughter.
One of the first priorities is to get your baby registered.
Every child must be registered with an official registrar of births, deaths and marriages within 21 days (a short extension can be made in exceptional circumstances).
You should receive a card or information sheet from the hospital with details of your baby's birth, including the time and the location. You should bring this with you to the registration office
From 1st January 2007 parents may now register the birth of their child at any registration office in Scotland.
If you are married it would be helpful to bring along your marriage cert if available.
The people who can register the birth of a baby are:
If the parents are married to each other, either the mother or the father can register the birth.
If the parents are unmarried, only the mother can register the birth.
If the parents are unmarried and wish the fathers name to be included on the register and birth certificate, both must attend the registration office.
Under exceptional circumstances a relative could register the birth, but you will need to contact the registrar for advice.
After you've registered
There's no charge for registering the birth of your son or daughter and you will receive an abbreviated birth certificate. If you prefer you can have a more detailed birth certificate which does carry a small charge.
The registrar will give you a form (EC58) which has your baby's national health service (NHS) number. You should take this form to your doctor when you enrol your son or daughter.
