Internet and computers

PCs are available for you to use in all our libraries, free of charge. You don't have to be a member of the library to use the computers, but we do encourage you to join to get the full benefit of using the service.

To log into the PCs, you'll need your library barcode number (leave out the P at the start) and your four digit PIN. If you don't have a PIN yet, contact your local library.

What do we offer?

Our PCs have:

All our libraries have black and white printing facilities and some also have scanners and colour printers. You may bring in your own disks to use in our PCs, but we ask that we are allowed to check them for viruses before you use them.

Giffnock Library has free WiFi access. Ask library staff at Giffnock for information about registering for this service.

All our libraries offer the following assistive technology:

  • Zoomtext screen reading software

  • big keyboards

  • tracker-ball mice

  • touch screen monitors

Most of all, we provide the opportunity to get online in a warm, safe and welcoming environment where staff are on hand to assist you wherever they can.

Acceptable PC use

As a PC user in the library, you must respect the privacy of others. This means you must not transmit information, photographs or images of another individual without their knowledge and consent, through use of mobile phone cameras or otherwise. Full details are contained in our Acceptable Use Policy for PCs in Libraries, which is available to read at the bottom of this page. You must agree to abide by this policy every time you log into a library PC.

Computer classes

If you're new to computers, you'd like to brush up your skills, or you're interested in gaining a computing qualification, your local library can help. East Renfrewshire is home to six library learning centres which offer courses to match all abilities. Learning has never been easier!

Children and Internet safety

Children who are under the age of eleven years old must be accompanied by an adult when using a library PC. In order to use the computers in the children's areas of our libraries, your child must come to the library counter to make a booking. The PCs in these areas block access to online chatrooms.

Children are reminded they should be alert at all times while using the internet. Remember, to be sure of a fun, and above all safe, online experience, do not:

  • Give out your real name

  • Give out your telephone number or email address

  • Give out details of where you live or what school you go to

If you are unsure or suspect anything, please either tell a member of the library staff or, if using the computer at home, tell your parents.
