Sending your child to nursery

To ensure a smooth transition from nursery to primary, every address in East Renfrewshire is allocated a local nursery.  These nursery catchments are closely linked to local primary schools and are detailed on the attached list.  You will find the name of your catchment child nursery indicated at point 1 on your application form.  Although your child should be guaranteed a place within this nursery for his/her pre-school year, places are limited for ante-pre-school children. Where demand exceeds availability, the attached priority system will be implemented.  Thereafter, places for ante-pre-school children will be allocated by ballot.  If unsuccessful in gaining a place in your catchment nursery we will offer an alternative placement in another local authority establishment.  Should you wish to choose a nursery which is not your catchment the priority system will also apply.

Parents are asked to indicate a preference for a morning/afternoon place and where possible we will meet demand.  Where demand exceeds availability we will allocate sessions by ballot.

We also work in partnership with the following private and voluntary providers:

Priority System for Adminssion to Pre 5 Establishments

The priority system for the allocation of places is as follows:

Priority 1: Child protection, Prevention and Additional Support Needs

Automatic admission will be given to any child considered by the Social Work Department to be in need of protection, who is looked after by the Authority, or whose admission will prevent reception into care.  Automatic admission will also be given to any child referred by East Renfrewshire Psychological Service and the Pre-School Community Assessment Team or by the Education Department’s Children’s Allocation and Review Evaluation (CARE) Group.

Priority 2: Deferred Entry to Primary School

Admission will be granted to those children whose birthday is in January or February and whose parents wish to defer entry to primary school.  This should be indicated at the time of registration for primary school and no later than 31 January of any given year.

Please Note: If your child’s birthday is between the start of the school year in August and December you may also choose to defer entry to primary school for a year.  However, a nursery place will not be guaranteed and application for a further year in an East Renfrewshire Council nursery must be accompanied by a written statement by East Renfrewshire Psychological Service, which states the benefits to the child.

Priority 3 :Four-Year Olds in Catchment Nursery

Admission will be given firstly to children in their pre-school year whose parents accept a place in their local nursery school as indicated on the application form.

Priority 4: Three-Year Olds in Catchment Nursery

Three year olds in Catchment Nursery Admission will be given to –

  • children who have an older sibling attending the same nursery

  • children whose parents are accepting 5 sessions in their local authority nursery

  • children whose parents are not accepting 5 sessions in their local authority nursery

Please note that although places are limited we will endeavour to offer a place in your child’s catchment nursery.  However, it may be necessary to offer children a place in an alternative East Renfrewshire Council nursery.

Priority 5:

a) Admission will be given to pre-school children living in East Renfrewshire whose parents do not wish to accept the guaranteed place in the local nursery, but make a request for a place in an alternative East Renfrewshire Council nursery.

b) Admission will be given to ante-pre-school children living in East Renfrewshire whose parents do not wish to accept the guaranteed place in the local nursery, but make a request for a place in an alternative East Renfrewshire Council nursery.

Priority 6:

Admission will be given to children resident outwith East Renfrewshire whose parents make a request for –

  • a pre-school place

  • an ante-pre-school place

NB: Due to the high demand by residents of East Renfrewshire Council for nursery places, if you fall into this priority band then it is advisable to also apply for a nursery place within your own local authority.
