Robert Burns & Highland Mary by William Gemmell

Doors Open Day 2010: Statue House

As part of this year's Doors Open Day programme, we are pleased to open Statue House to the public on Saturday 4 September, from 11am to 4pm.  William Gemmell (1814-1891) was a joiner who lived his whole life in Eaglesham.  A self-taught sculptor in his spare time, only six of his works are known to survive.  These can be viewed at Statue House in Statue Lane, Eaglesham, just past No. 20 Montgomery Street.

No booking is necessary for this event, simply turn up on the day.  If you would like any further information, contact Heritage Services staff using the details at the bottom of the page.

Norwegian Visit to Neilston

Neilston Library recently hosted a welcome for 80 year old Borgny Kvalnes of Norway, who was a refugee in Neilston during the Second World War.  Member of staff Joyce Wallace, who has extensively researched the history of the Kingston refugee camp, organised the event for Borgny and her family, which was also attended by Provost Alex Mackie and many local people.

Memories of Mearns in Wartime, 1939-1945

This booklet has been produced by Mearns History Group, in order to record memories of life in Mearns during the Second World War before they are lost.  Some of the local people interviewed were at school at the time, or were in their late teens, or served in the armed forces.

Copies are available to buy at Mearns Community Library, priced £3.50.  All proceeds from sales will go to Erskine.  A copy is available for loan from Mearns Library, and for reference in Giffnock Heritage Centre, Giffnock Community Library.
