Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How can I pay my Council Tax?
  • A: You can pay your Council Tax in a variety of ways: online, by telephone or by Direct Debit for example.  Please see our webpage "Account enquiries and payments" for full details.
  • Q: Why have you sent more than one final notice for council tax to my house?
  • A: By law, we must send a copy of the reminder notice to each of the liable council tax payers within the household. The full account balance is shown on each of these notices.
  • Q: I have received a final notice on my council tax and cannot afford to pay the amount in full. Can I make an arrangement to pay by instalments?
  • A: To discuss the possibility of a payment arrangement, call our Customer Services Officers on (0141) 577 3002.  Please note that if you have previously defaulted on an arrangement, we may not agree to another arrangement.
  • Q: I have received a summary warrant for council tax and I am on benefit. Can I pay directly from my benefit?
  • A: Yes, you can pay your Council Tax directly from your benefit, but only if you get Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance. These are the only benefits that we can get direct deductions from.
  • Q: I have received a summary warrant for Council Tax arrears. Why?
  • A:

You will have been sent a summary warrant for Council Tax arrears if you have failed to pay in accordance with a previously issued reminder notice.

If you miss a payment instalment, we will issue a reminder to you.  If you bring your payments up to date and keep them up to date, we will take no further action.  If your payments are not brought up to date, we will apply to the Sheriff Court for a Summary Warrant.  Any Warrant issued adds costs of 10% of your outstanding balance to the total amount you owe - this is known as a Statutory Addition.

You must pay your Council Tax in accordance with the instructions on your bill.  Payment is due on the 1st of each month.  If you choose to pay later in the month, you risk receiving reminder notices. It is therefore important that you pay on time.
