Private Landlord Registration

The private landlord registration scheme was launched in Scotland in April 2006.  This scheme introduced a legal requirement for private landlords to apply for registration with each local authority where they let residential property.  Failure to do so is a criminal offence.

The aim of landlord registration is to ensure that all private landlords in Scotland are ‘fit and proper’ to be letting residential property.  The requirement will help local authorities to remove disreputable landlords from the market, and protect tenants and their neighbours from the impact of antisocial behaviour and mismanaged property on the wider community.

You can register online at the Landlord Registration Scotland website or by downloading an application form.  Discounts are available if you apply online

Alternatively you can request an application pack from the council.

  • Fee & discount structure;

  • Exemptions to registration;

  • Advice & assistance provided by local authorities.

If you wish to participate in the consultation you can access electronic versions of the consultation documents and accompanying material on the Scottish Government's Consultaions website.

The consultation will close on the 10 October 2008.
