East Renfrewshire Council has appointed a new director of education.

Mhairi Shaw will take up the position with immediate effect.

Her appointment was announced at today's meeting of the education committee, where she was congratulated by councillors.

Mrs Shaw had been in her previous position as head of education services since 2004.

Her first position within East Renfrewshire Council was as head teacher of Mearns Primary School, a role she held for three years from 2001.

Prior to that, Mrs Shaw was head teacher at a school in Bellshill and has worked in education for more than 30 years.

Convener for education and equalities, Councillor Elaine Green, said: "I am absolutely delighted Mhairi has been appointed as our new director of education.

"Mhairi has worked as part of a very successful team for many years and played a vital role in shaping East Renfrewshire's education services into the best in Scotland.

"At the committee meeting today we discussed our young people's exam results for this year, which were truly outstanding - in fact they are the best we have ever had, a record-breaking year.

"That shows the quality of education Mhairi and her team is providing - and I know she will continue to build on that legacy."

Mrs Shaw replaces John Wilson, who retired from the position in August.

In her previous role as head of education services for inclusion, schools and quality improvement, Mrs Shaw was responsible for a broad range of functions within education services.
