Adult and community education

The Adult and Family learning service provide community based adult and literacy learning in East Renfrewshire.  These are informal learning opportunities for adults, delivered in community venues that focus on developing skills to help adults in everyday personal, community or family life, further learning or employment.

What  does Adult Learning provide

Adult learning offers support working one to one or in small groups through short courses or regular sessions which may be in:

  • Personal development - improving your communication skills including confidence building, computers/IT, problem solving, working with other people.

  • Literacy and numeracy - developing your reading, writing, spelling and number skills and includes learning English for speakers of other languages (ESOL).

  • Guidance - offering the right level of support to enable you to engage with the best learning or life choices for yourself.

A variety of classes, group work and individual support is available for adults.

What do Adult literacies provide?

Adult literacies offer help to develop your reading, writing and number skills.  Support is also provided by the national campaign the big plus

Learning is offered in small groups or on a one to one basis, this is free and is available in local venues throughout East Renfrewshire.  Individual learning programmes (ILP’s) are designed around your needs. You might be interested in:

  • Brushing up in reading, writing, spelling and number work

  • Receiving support to do new things at work for example improving report writing or increasing your chances to gain promotion

  • Updating your skills to help you get back into employment

  • Increasing your ability to write letters and fill in forms confidently

  • Receiving  support towards passing industry entrance exams for example the police entrance exam

  • Helping your children with their reading and number work

Adult and continuing education

Adult and continuing education is provided by Glasgow University, Langside and Reid Kerr colleges.
