Private Counselling
Private counsellors are usually self-employed qualified individuals who will see you on a confidential, private, one-to-one basis. Often a fee is charged per session.
It’s important to know that you are getting advice from an accredited professional with the right qualifications and experience. It’s also a good idea to find out a bit more about the sessions, for example, how long they last for, how many you’ll be attending and how much they cost.
Professional bodies have lists of those individual counsellor’s who are accredited. Before you select a counsellor, check with these bodies:
- Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland (COSCA) offers a regularly updated database of counsellors in Scotlan, as well as information on how to select a counsellor.
- Person Centred Therapy in Scotland (PCT) provides lists of counsellors in Scotland and further information.
- British Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BACP) will guide you through the locating a professionals therapist.
- British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) will help you to find a therapist and learn more about what to expect from psychotherapy.
- National Register of Psychotherapist (UKCP) promotes psychotherapy, answers common questions and lists psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors throughout the UK.
