Keep your child safe

There are few young people these days that don't have an email account, chat online or use a social networking site like MySpace or Bebo.

Anyone who pays attention to the media, however, will be aware of the associated risks of a young person using the Internet, such as unsavory and pornographic sites, online predators and cyber bullying.

Most parents wouldn't want to ban their child from the Internet, after all the Internet is also fun, educational and - perhaps most importantly for young people - it's an extra way of keeping in touch with friends.

So what should you do if you're worried about your child's online safety? Here are a few ideas:

  • If you're not Internet savvy, think about taking a class. This will improve your understanding and give you and your child something new you can enjoy together.
  • Set boundaries for children and make sure they understand the importance of online safety.
  • Spend time with your child online.
  • Think about keeping any PCs in a general family area. This should encourage your child to be more open about their online activity.
  • Install filtering software that will prevent your child from seeing anything they shouldn't. Get Net Wise will help you to find the right tool for the job.
  • Check what sites your child has visited by clicking on the "History" icon on your browser's toolbar.
  • Report any obscene or threatening messages to your Internet Service Provider (i.e. the company you get your Internet from) and to the Internet Watch Foundation
