Computer Skills

Your local library offers a range of computer classes, aimed at various levels of ability, that will help you brush up on your computing skills.

Basic Computing Classes

The Basic Computing course is tutor-led for complete beginners. It will introduce you to:

  • Mouse skills
  • Word processing
  • Internet
  • E-mail

Classes are small (usually 2-4 people) and are often taken by volunteers. They are conducted in an informal way in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Along with the tutor you will be working from a booklet that is yours to keep, so you can practice as much as you like.

The course duration is one hour over a six week period. There is a cost for this course, concessionary charges apply.


Beyond the Basics Computing Classes

Beyond the Basics picks up from where the Basics class left off. Again, it is tutor led and builds on your existing skills covering:

  • Word processing
  • Files and folders
  • Internet

The course duration is one hour over a four week period. There is a cost for this, concessionary charges apply.


Bite-sized Learning Sessions

These are FREE ½ - 1 hour chunks of learning, designed by the Libraries Learning Team to plug gaps in your ICT knowledge. Topics include:

  • Getting the most out of the net
  • Creating headed notepaper
  • Sending e-mail with attachments
  • Scanning and saving a picture
  • Understanding file management
  • Creating address labels in Word
  • Getting started with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel

These courses are free, look out for them being advertised on your local libraries noticeboard.


Learning Bytes - Online Courses

If you want to brush up on your computing skills, or get to grips with Microsoft Office packages, you can learn at your own pace with a Learning Byte.

Learning Bytes are short, free, online courses produced by Learndirect Scotland. These courses are free and signing up is easy; just pop along to you local East Renfrewshire library to register. Once you're signed up you can use a library PC free of charge or log on wherever there's Internet access.
