As you get older, you’ll be thinking more about how you live and where. You may want to stay in your own home, but may need assistance, you might be thinking about moving to sheltered housing or, in the future, to a care home.

You'll find more information on all the topics below on the main East Renfrewshire Council site. The contacts on the Over 60s home page will also be able to answer your questions.


East Renfrewshire Council Housing Service

ERC Housing Service will be able to help you with most housing related enquiries.Contact them through Customer First on 0141 577 3001 or visit your local Housing Office.

Sheltered Housing & Care Homes

East Renfrewshire Council owns and manages 8 sheltered housing complexes (242 flats in total) across East Renfrewshire. There are also several privately-run complexes. For a full list, including ERC properties, see the Housing Care website.

There are several care homes in East Renfrewshire. A list of care homes is also available.

The Scottish Government have produced a booklet entitled Thinking About Moving into a Care Home (PDF Logo PDF, 270.86 kb). To view this document you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free from the Adobe site.


Help with staying in your own home

Adapt and maintain your home

If you or a member of your family has an illness or disability that makes daily life difficult, you may want to think about adapting your home. This can mean adding a ramp to the entrance way, handrails: showers; and lever taps.


East Renfrewshire Occupational Therapy Team

The Occupational Therapy Team can help give advice on adapting your house.

You can get in touch with the Team directly or a relative, carer or health professional can make a referral on your behalf. An Occupational Therapist will then assess your needs. For more information contact the Occupational Therapy Team on 0141 577 6100.


Care and Repair Renfrewshire

Care & Repair Renfrewshire provides free and confidential advice and assistance to older people and people with disabilities. The aim is to enable repairs, improvements and adaptations to be carried out allowing people to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes comfortably and securely.

Mr Diggit Service

This service is administered by the Social Work department and funded through the Area Committees to undertake small gardening jobs for people of pensionable age living in the East Renfrewshire area. The service is provided free of charge with the client supplying the materials.

Stay safe in your home

Community Alarm Service

The Community Alarm Service enables individuals who feel vulnerable in their home to have immediate contact with a Call Centre for emergency assistance. Families, the emergency services, GPs and the Council's Rapid Response Team can all be accessed. More information about assessment for the service can be obtained by calling 0141 577 3775.

ERC Home Care Service

The Home Care service helps people to remain in their own home, providing comfort and security.

The service can provide personal care and practical support such as assistance with rising, dressing, bathing, medication, preparing meals, eating, shopping, pension collection, going to bed etc.

Meals on Wheels

Message in a Bottle Scheme

This scheme, funded by the Area Committees, is free to all residents of East Renfrewshire and is of particular value to older people who live alone.
Vital information can be accessed in an emergency, including medical conditions, medication, GP etc by completing a standard form which is inserted into the ‘bottle’ and stored in the fridge. Emergency services are fully familiar with the scheme which ensures that vital information is available in an accident or emergency situation.
