Household waste
Refuse Collection
We collect refuse from every house in East Renfrewshire on a weekly basis and we are duty bound to do this in a safe and well-managed way. Please place bins and recycling containers on the kerbside for by 7.00am on the day of collection but not earlier than 7.00 pm on the previous evening.
Bins and containers should be placed in such a way as to cause as little obstruction as possible to pedestrians. In most cases bins and containers should be placed as close to your property’s boundary i.e. against wall, fence, hedge and not in the middle of the footpath or on roadside.
Alternatively, if you are advised by the council to place the containers in a particular location then you should place them in that specified location.
To assist operations, bins should be placed with handles facing the road and lid closed. Recycling containers should be placed next to the bin.
Containers must be removed from the kerbside and stored on/in your property as soon as practical but no later than 24 hours following collection.
This applies to all bins and recycling containers.
Where location permits the use of bins and recycling containers, waste not presented for collection in a bin or recycling container will not be uplifted and could leave you liable to receiving a fixed penalty notice.
Excess Waste
You can help us to reduce the amount of refuse we collect and meet our tough landfill reduction targets. Each property is supplied with one bin for your domestic rubbish. We no longer collect additional refuse bins or waste that is left beside your bin.
Any extra waste can be dealt with in the following ways:
You can recycle glass, cans, paper, plastics and cardboard. Use the kerbside recycling schemes or the recycling points in your area.
Take your waste to either of the recycling centres at Carlibar Road, Barrhead or Ayr Road, Newton Mearns.
Call for a special uplift and the waste will be collected from your house. Please note, you may be charged for this service.
If you already have an additional refuse bin and feel that we should continue collecting it, you can apply online:

What happens to the collected waste?
The refuse that is collected from every household is taken to the waste transfer station at Greenhags, Ayr Road, Newton Mearns. There the waste is weighed on a weighbridge before being tipped into an articulated lorry for bulk transfer. Once the waste has been bulked, it is taken to a landfill site. Currently, most of our landfill waste goes to Greengairs Landfill Site, near Airdrie.
Performance
European and national targets require us to lower the amount of waste we send to landfill every year, so that our reliance on landfill is reduced. This also encourages us to increase the proportion of waste we recycle.
33095 tonnes of waste from household refuse collections was sent to landfill in the year 1st April 2007 to 31st March 2008. This was a decrease of 2007 tonnes on the previous year.
