Information on surface water and public health contamination

Surface Water and Contamination

East Renfrewshire Council has a huge number of fresh water lochs, rivers and streams. Many of our parks have small ponds and lochans and many footpaths/gardens follow a natural watercourse. Occasionally these bodies of water can suffer from contamination as a result of blocked sewers , accidental spills or natural events like a blue /green algal bloom. Although SEPA and Scottish Water are the main organisations responsible for monitoring and investigating the contamination of surface water, the Council will also monitor open waters to assess the risk from algae in order to prevent harm to the public and animals.

Contamination of a watercourse or river

If you suspect that a watercourse is being contaminated then in the first instance you should  contact SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) help line on Tel:  0800807060.

If SEPA are unable to assist in the matter then the Environmental Health Department can be contacted on Tel: 0141 577 3782 or Environmentalhealth@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk

Presence of Sewage

If you suspect that there is a leak of sewage / blocked drain or strong sewage odour then in the first instance you should report the matter to Scottish Water on 08007310840.

If Scottish Water are unable to assist in the matter then the Environmental Health Department can be contacted on Tel: 0141 577 3782 or Environmentalhealth@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk

Algal Blooms

The Council monitors open waters annually to assess the risk from algae and acts to prevent harm to the public and animals . If you are concerned about algae in any water please contact Environmental Health on Tel: 0141 577 3782 or Environmentalhealth@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk
