Barrhead
Barrhead is an industrial town to the north of East Renfrewshire and lies on the River Leven, 7 miles south west of Glasgow. It developed from a number of smaller villages in the late 18th Century in association with the textile industry. There are plenty of local amenities such as a sports centre with pool and gym, a golf course and local shopping facilities.
Busby
A southern residential suburb of Glasgow, Busby lies on the White Cart River 6 miles south of Glasgow City Centre. It once straddled the border between the old counties of Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire and had a paper mill, chemical works, cotton mills and bleachfields. Greenbank House, is a National Trust property built in 1765 located 1 mile to the west of Busby. There are restaurants, bars and other leisure facilities nearby.
Clarkston
Clarkston lies 5 miles south of Glasgow and is a commuter settlement on the southern outskirts of city centre and 6 miles southeast of Paisley
Greenbank Gardens is a National Trust property located between Clarkston and nearby Newton Mearns.
Eaglesham
Eaglesham is a village situated 9 miles south of Glasgow and 5 miles southwest of East Kilbride. The original village had held a weekly market since the mid 17th Century, but the present layout of two rows of houses separated by trees, a meadow and a stream was created in 1796 for the workers at the Earl of Eglinton's cotton factory.
Notable buildings include the parish church (1790), a monument to two Covenanters shot in May 1685, the ruins of Polnoon Castle (14th century), and Eaglesham House. In 1941 the German Nazi leader Rudolf Hess landed by parachute near this house, possibly on a peace mission. In 1960 Eaglesham became the first Scottish village listed as a place of special historical interest. For those who play golf there is an 18 hole course in the village.
Giffnock
An outer suburb of the Glasgow conurbation, Giffnock lies 5 miles south of Glasgow city centre and just over a mile south of Pollokshaws. Eastwood House, the former home of Viscount Weir, lies within the grounds of Eastwood Park and is used as a cutural and recreational venue. Rouken Glen Park is located nearby.
Neilston
This former textile village is situated on the Levern River in the old county of Renfrewshire, 2 miles south west of Barrhead and 9 miles south-west of Glasgow. It became a centre for bleaching cotton and calico-printing in the 18th Century and continued printing and spinning cotton into the 20th century.
Uplawmoor
Uplawmoor is a small former mining village 3 miles south west of Neilston. There are old mining shafts in the hill over Loch Libo and some of the buildings are 200-300 years old.
