Road maintenance
Reporting roads and lighting faults
As the roads authority, East Renfrewshire Council is responsible for all its public roads. Our roads and transportation service manages and maintains them. One of our functions is to take reasonable steps to keep the public roads safe for pedestrians and drivers. By reporting roads and lighting faults to us, you play an invaluable role in keeping our road network in this safe condition.
What faults should I report?
You can report any fault on a public road. Here are some examples:
street lights out
doors missing from lighting columns
gullies not working properly
missing ironwork such as gully gratings and inspection chamber covers
traffic lights not working properly
potholes in the road or footway
water leaking onto a road or footway.
What information will I need to give?
The more information you give us, the better. We need details of the fault and, in particular, as good a description as possible of where it is. If you are reporting a fault with a street light, we will ask you for the number on the lamp post as this speeds up the repair.
You don’t have to give us your name, address and phone number, but if you do, it will help us get back in touch with you about the fault if we need to.
How quickly will you repair the fault?
This will vary depending on the type of fault and how easy it is for us to find the fault based on the information you give us.
We will decide if the fault is emergency or nonemergency and respond to it within the following timescales:
Traffic light faults
Emergency: We will start work on site within two hours.
Non-emergency: We will start work on site within 48 hours.
Road faults
Emergency: We will start work on site within two hours.
Non-emergency: We will assess non-emergency faults and inspect the site if necessary. If the fault is our responsibility, we will prioritise the fault into one of three categories:
Category 1 Repair within five working days
Category 2 Repair within 28 working days
Category 3 Put on our assessment list for future repair.
Other organisations may be responsible for faults relating to water, sewers, electricity, gas and telephones. We will tell them about the fault and ask them to take the necessary action.
Street light faults
Emergency: We will start work on site within two hours.
Non-emergency: We will inspect and repair the fault within five working days. However, if it is an underground fault with the electricity supply from Scottish Power, we will tell them straightaway. They will respond to the fault within their own timescales. This is out of our control.
Reporting: Faults should be reported to the Roads and Transportation Service.
