Find out if you're eligible to vote, how to register and your options for voting.

Am I eligible to vote?

The elections that you can vote in usually depend on your nationality and residency status.

How do I register to vote?

You must be on the electoral register to vote.

You can register to vote at any time by applying online.

If you're not on the electoral register or would like to register to vote via telephone, please call the electoral registration helpline on 0300 300 0150.

How do I vote?

There are three different ways to vote - in person, by post, or by proxy.

Voting in person

If you choose to vote in person, your poll card will tell you where to go to vote.

Voting by post

If you want to vote by post, you must apply in writing to the Electoral Registration Officer. If your application is granted a postal pack will be sent to the address you request.

Once you've used your postal vote you can't change your mind and vote at a polling station.

However, you can cancel your vote by writing to the Electoral Registration Officer.

Details of the deadline for cancellation are included in your postal pack.

Voting by proxy

If you wish to vote by proxy, you must say why you need someone else to vote on your behalf. For example, you may be:

  • going on holiday
  • unable to get to the polling place because of a physical condition
  • unable to get to the polling station because of work
  • attending an educational course
  • a Crown servant or in the Armed Forces

Anyone eligible to vote in the election and willing to be your proxy can vote on your behalf.

To find out more about registration and postal or proxy voting, please contact the  Electoral Registration Officer  0300 300 0150.

If you wish to remove your name from electoral register, no longer wish to vote or are moving house, please contact the Electoral Registration Officer:
