Residents to benefit from life-saving defibrillators

Twenty three life-saving devices are to be installed in public places throughout East Renfrewshire after a £25,000 investment by the council.

 Defibs

These potentially life-saving machines are the first to be installed by the council and will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the local public. This follows liaison with Levern Valley Defibrillator Partnership to ensure that defibrillator installations are located as effectively as possible.

The automated external defibrillators (AED) are small machines which can be accessed by members of the local community, for use in an emergency if someone suffers a cardiac arrest.

The units are simple and clear to use with a green button to power on and a red button to shock the patient if required. The devices will not allow the user to shock a victim that has a heartbeat. Clear voice prompts direct the user, concisely stating each instruction one step at a time.

"I am delighted that 23 defibrillators will be installed throughout the local area during the coming weeks. These machines are the first to be put in place by the council, benefitting local residents with round the clock access to equipment if someone suffers a cardiac arrest. For every minute it takes for a defibrillator to reach someone and deliver a shock, their chances of survival reduce by up to 10%. The installation of the defibrillators will be vital to our local area, potentially making a difference in helping to save a life." Council Leader, Councillor Tony Buchanan
