Elections and voting

Local government elections 2017

On Thursday 4 May 2017 elections took place across Scotland to elect new councillors.

Electors in East Renfrewshire were asked to elect a total of 18 councillors across 5 wards (a reduction from the former 20 councillors across 6 wards).

This was introduced by the Scottish Government following the review of local authority wards and councillor numbers by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland.

E-counting: how does it work?

The local government elections use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system.

Under this system, voters rank the candidates on a ballot paper in order of preference.

Due to the complicated nature of a count led by the STV system, ballot papers will be counted electronically.
