Think before you sign

'Think before you sign' is the message being given to East Renfrewshire residents this Christmas when subscribing to goods or services.

National Consumer Week 2017

The advice follows the launch of National Consumer Week - an annual campaign run by the Consumer Protection Partnership (CPP) highlighting issues that affect consumers across the UK. The campaign runs from Monday 27 November until Sunday 3 December.

This year's campaign, 'Not what you signed up for', focuses on subscriptions and is underpinned by research conducted by the Citizens Advice Partnership Knowledge Hub, which has identified millions of complaints surrounding this issue.

It is common for consumers to sign up for subscriptions inadvertently and as a result, face problems when cancelling future payments. Businesses often use deceptive language and provide misleading terms and conditions and this becomes a 'subscription trap' for consumers.

The aim of the campaign is to help consumers' understand their rights and enable them to tackle any problems they face and advice will be shared on East Renfrewshire Council's social media channels during National Consumer Week.

National Consumer Week is a valuable way to educate local residents on topical consumer issues and outline ways in which they can protect themselves when purchasing goods or services.
