Bonnyton House set to become integrated centre of excellence for older people in East Renfrewshire

Proposals agreed by board

Bonnyton House

Members of East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership Integration Joint Board have unanimously agreed to further develop exciting proposals which could secure a vibrant and long-term future of Bonnyton House.

The proposals would see the existing residential facility developed into an integrated centre of excellence for older people in East Renfrewshire.

It was previously agreed in 2015 that Bonnyton House would be sold as a consequence of budget pressures. However a sale for the facility has not been achieved.

Since then, as part of a wider NHS strategy to invest in community based resources for older people requiring intensive and complex support, it has been announced that the contract for NHS continuing care at Mearnskirk Hospital will not be renewed in 2019.

This has given rise to an opportunity to potentially extend the range of services offered at Bonnyton to include intensive rehabilitation and post hospital discharge care, as well as the creation of a six bed palliative care unit to provide the highest standard of end of life care locally in East Renfrewshire.

These ambitious proposals could see Bonnyton become a centre of excellence for high quality support to older residents in East Renfrewshire. The proposals fully align with the HSCP's focus to further reduce unplanned admissions to hospital and to support residents either at home or in a homely setting. This is great news for existing Bonnyton House residents and staff as well as for a much wider group of East Renfrewshire residents requiring complex support and care who would also benefit from these proposals. It also means that East Renfrewshire residents who would have received care at Mearnskirk could continue to receive the highest standards of care and support locally. Councillor Caroline Bamforth, East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership Integration Joint Board Chair

This integrated and flexible new service would be provided by our existing Bonnyton staff and supported by our experienced community rehabilitation and nursing teams. Over the next few months the HSCP will work with GPs, geriatricians and others to further develop the model and identify further training and investment requirements.

IJB members agreed that the proposals will now be developed further to ensure the HSCP is able to align staffing and agree a detailed financial framework to meet the likely demand for this service.

Work with the Care Inspectorate will also now take place to ensure they are satisfied that the new service is appropriately registered and staffed to deliver the service.

A further paper to allow more detailed discussion will be brought back to the IJB in early April next year.
