Council supports charity to create new community hub

Barrhead will soon have a new community hub on Main Street after councillors agreed to lease a disused council building to a local charity.

The Include Me 2 Club is set to lease the James McGuire Building from East Renfrewshire Council for a nominal rent of £1 a year.

The charity, who work with and support children, young people and adults with additional support needs and disabilities, intend to turn the building into a much needed community facility for their clubs, arts activities and events involving all members of families.

Due to its location and listed building status, the property has been vacant for several years and Include Me 2 Club's proposal clearly demonstrated the ability of the charity to fund the running of the property in its current state.

Councillors agreed to the move at a Cabinet meeting in November, and steps will now be taken to finalise negotiations and conclude the lease.

I am absolutely delighted that this building will be brought back into use and create a vital hub for those with disabilities and their families. The charity carry out fantastic work in our community and I am in no doubt they will further this work when they are in place in their new facility. I wish them all the best with their venture. East Renfrewshire Council Leader, Councillor Tony Buchanan

The Board of Trustees at Include Me 2 Club SCIO are delighted that East Renfrewshire Council approved our plans to rejuvenate the James McGuire Building and bring it back into community use, the organisations focus is to create community based opportunities for our members and wider community, that ensures that disability is at the heart of the community and not hidden away.  With the McGuire Building we couldn't get any more central to the heart of Barrhead and look to develop a range of opportunities from the space that will continue the organisations ability to bring positive impact and opportunities in many areas, providing a social enterprise approach to activities, programmes and services. We can't wait to get started and launch the space in early 2019. Paul McIlvenny, Chairperson of Include Me 2 Club SCIO
