45 roads and 15 pavements to be resurfaced across East Renfrewshire
Projects covering all five Council ward areas will begin next month

Published: 27 March 2025
We've approved a roads maintenance programme which will utilise an additional investment of £3.5million to improve the condition of residential roads and pavements over the next financial year.
The 2025/26 roads maintenance programme will use the additional £3.5million of resources to resurface 45 roads and 15 pavements throughout the area.
In its 2019/20 budget, the Council committed an additional £15m capital investment for roads infrastructure enhancements over the following five years. The improvement programme was then extended for a further five years, after the Council committed an extra £17.5m of capital investment to upgrade local roads and pavements.
The £3.5million programme will see projects covering all five Council ward areas across the authority, and improvements are set to begin next month.
In the first six years of this programme, a total of 223 roads and 65 pavements have benefited from investment.
The projects planned for next year will see the figures for resurfacing rise to 268 roads and 80 pavements.
As with previous years, the prioritisation of the resurfacing projects is based on a range of factors including: the structural condition of the road or pavement, its usage, cost of maintenance for the previous three years, number of complaints received and geographical spread.
This additional investment will allow for full resurfacing improvements to be made to roads and pavements, instead of standard safety defect repairs, and the majority of the additional £3.5million allocation is being directed towards C class and unclassified class roads, which make up over 80% of the overall network.
Roads and pavements set to be resurfaced across the area over the coming year include: Lomond Court in Barrhead, Glen Tarbert Drive in Neilston, Dalmeny Avenue in Giffnock, Woodyett Road in Busby, Stamperland Avenue in Clarkston, Hill Drive in Eaglesham and Wylie Avenue in Newton Mearns.
Councillor Danny Devlin, Convener for Environment and Housing, said: 'Investment in our road network is a top priority for the Council so it's been great to see the difference that this programme has made to resident's streets over the past six years. We realise the importance of quality roads and pavements to our residents, commuters, and visitors, and this vital work will help to continue to improve the standard across the whole area. It's fantastic that 288 projects have been completed since this programme began and I'm looking forward to seeing these works get underway in the year ahead and take our total to almost 350.'
Each year, the Scottish Roads Maintenance Condition Survey (SRMCS) calculates a Road Condition Indicator (RCI). In 2024, the overall RCI for East Renfrewshire improved by 3.7% compared to the previous year.
Alongside the resurfacing works, in 2023, the Council committed an additional £3.7m of capital investment over five years for street lighting infrastructure. This involves removing transmission columns that could become dangerous, and replacing with new columns with significantly safer underground supply cables. To date, 306 new lighting columns have been installed with 11,000 metres of new underground supply cable.
A further £0.6m of additional funding was allocated for street lighting conversion to LEDs in 2023. Since this award, 99.8% of lighting columns have now been fitted with LEDs, and it's estimated to be fully completed over the summer.
As well as the additional capital funding, general capital funding for roads resurfacing was approved by Councillors in February, and will be spent on all classes of roads in East Renfrewshire.
The Council ensures that all potholes reported are inspected as soon as possible, with the most serious potholes prioritised for repair. Residents are encouraged to report road defects to us.
