Direct Debits privacy notice

- process your application to set up a Direct Debit
- monitor ongoing Direct Debit payments
- communicate with you about your Direct Debit application
- cancel the Direct Debit as necessary
We process your information in order to perform a task carried out in the public interest and in the exercise of official authority and to fulfil legal obligations to ensure proper administration of our financial affairs in terms of the Local Government (Scotland). Whilst we may process other information in relation to a particular service or services you receive in relation to direct debit payments we will collect only the following personal information about you:
- contact details
- bank details (including account number and sort code)
- payment history
Under data protection legislation, this type of processing is permitted because it forms part of the performance of a contract.
You can refer to the relevant Service Privacy Notice for further information about how we may process other information about you to deliver our statutory functions and services to you.
It's important that we hold accurate and up to date information. If any details have changed, or change in the future, then you should ensure that you inform East Renfrewshire Council as soon as possible so that they can update your record.
Without the correct information your Direct Debit may not be set up. If we ask you to give specific information in order to process your application and you don't give this information, your application may not be processed. Deliberately giving false information is a crime.
In setting up a direct debit process the information will be collected directly from you. We'll also collect confirmation and reports about your direct debit either directly from Bacs or a third party processor.
BACs Payment Schemes Limited manages the direct debit payment scheme and we pass your applications to them. Bacs, in conjunction with your bank, will process your direct debit mandate.
Bacs is the data controller for your information once we, or a third party processor, transfer your information to them. You can find more information about how Bacs handle your information and the direct debit scheme on BACS direct debit privacy statement.
We'll only keep your personal data for as long as necessary and thereafter this will be securely destroyed. For the following purposes we'll keep personal data in relation to:
