Primary schools

Deferring your child starting school

You can choose to defer your child's entry to primary one if:

  • Your child turns five in January or February after the August they are supposed to start school. You can defer for one year.  A nursery place will be available for your child.
  • Your child turns five between the start of the new session and the end of December.  You can defer for one year.  A nursery place will not automatically be available in these circumstances.

If you choose to defer you should still register at your local primary school. You should also tell the head teacher you want to defer entry.

Please note if you choose to defer the place it may not be possible to change your mind. The place could be filled by another child.
