Merchant Navy Day 2025

We join with partners each year to honour the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy, past and present, who have played a vital role in keeping the island nation afloat.

Provost Mary Montague was joined by Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Colonel Peter McCarthy and Merchant Navy Deck Cadets from the City of Glasgow College to raise the flag in a show of respect and remembrance for those who have risked and lost their lives at sea.

At the event, Provost Mary Montague welcomed guests including local dignitaries, elected members and members of the local community, and acknowledged the UK's ongoing dependence on merchant seafarers and the importance of recognising their contributions.

Provost Mary Montague said: 'Merchant Navy Day is our annual opportunity to show the Council's appreciation and pay tribute to merchant seafarers, including those who are currently serving and veterans. From times of peace to times of war, they have ensured the safe passage of goods, fuel, food, and essential supplies, often at great personal risk.

'2025 marks ten years of The Seafarers' Charity 'Fly the Red Ensign' campaign on behalf of the maritime sector, which aims to champion the outstanding contributions our Merchant Navy seafarers make to the United Kingdom. As we raise our Red Ensign flag today, we acknowledge the UK's ongoing dependence on merchant seafarers. Those who sail under it are responsible for around 95% of the UK's imports and exports, and many play a crucial role in supporting the Royal Navy via the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

"The Council is proud to support this national campaign, as we reflect on the vital work of the Merchant Navy and its enduring legacy."

Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, Colonel Peter McCarthy, added: 'I am delighted to be able to join East Renfrewshire Council as they raise the Red Ensign to recognise the wonderful work done by the Merchant Navy, frequently in dangerous and hazardous sea lanes to maintain the continuing well-being and prosperity of our islands. They deserve our profound gratitude.'
